If Kate and William Need a Wedding Singer…

November 20, 2010

It’s been impossible to hide from the media circus that has surrounded the announcement of Kate Middleton and Prince William’s engagement this week.  And of course the inevitable “collectable” souvenirs have begun to surface:

But regardless of whether you’re a royalist or a republican I think you’d be hard pushed to deny that the upcoming royal wedding is, overall, a Good Thing.

From an economic point of view the wedding will undoubtedly have a positive effect.  “Experts” in the press have been plucking figures from the ether at random, but the general concensus is that additional income from tourism and the increased international focus on the UK will bring a significant amount of money into the country at a time when it’s much needed.

On a personal level, as someone who relies on weddings for a fair chunk of my business, I’m hoping that a high-profile wedding will provide a boost to that particular market.  (If anyone from Buckingham Palace is reading this I do still have some availability for Spring and Summer 2011).

Perhaps more importantly isn’t it just nice to have some Good News for a change?  Let’s not forget that at the heart of all the 24-hour-rolling-news speculation and trivia there are two young people who have found each other and want to make a lifelong commitment to one another.

And if it’s love that they’ve found then that is, absolutely and unquestionably, a Good Thing and I wish them every possible happiness together.
