A Mayfair Marriage

July 12, 2011

I get to sing at some very special places and the venue for my most recent London gig was no exception.  Harry’s Bar is a private members’ club in London’s Mayfair.  From the outside it looks quiet and demure, giving no clues about its lavish interior:

I was called by bride Vanessa six weeks before her wedding.  She and husband-to-be Simon were fans of the music of the 1930s and 40s, particularly Fred Astaire, and had been searching for live entertainment from that era for their wedding meal and reception.  However, with only limited space at Harry’s Bar they hadn’t been able to find an act which could fit into what little space they had available and feared they would have to settle for playing CDs instead.  They were delighted to find that my self-contained set-up would fit into the the small corner they had left.

Sure enough, I was able to squeeze my full set-up into the space allocated…

…with a second speaker discreetly placed a little further down the room to ensure that everyone could enjoy the music:

Vanessa and Simon booked a five-hour package of entertainment which meant I provided vintage background music for the first two hours while guests chatted and enjoyed drinks and canapes then performed three 45-minute live sets with breaks.

The venue was absolutely stunning.  The walls are covered in rich fabric by Fortuny of Venice and hung with framed originals by Peter Arno who was cartoonist for The New Yorker magazine from 1925 to 1968.

There’s even a beautiful stained glass window:

Add to that the fabulous wedding table decorations and the whole place looked amazing.

A wonderful evening was enjoyed by everyone and it was a pleasure and a privilege to be part of it all.
