A Knightingale Sang in Eastnor Castle

October 17, 2012

It’s not unusual for me to get a call asking if I’m available at short notice to sing at an event, but when groom-to-be Simon Muir phoned to ask if I was free the following day that really was a first for me!

A friend who had offered to provide live music for Simon’s wedding in Herefordshire had received an unexpected job offer from abroad leaving Simon and his bride Lindsey with a potentially very quiet drinks reception.  Luckily I was free to fill the breach and I’m so glad I was available because the venue was this place, the incredible Eastnor Castle:

Eastnor Castle was built in the 19th century for the Somers family.  The original architect, Robert Smirke, opted for the Norman Revival style for the building.  Later the family employed A. W. Pugin, the man responsible for remodelling The House of Lords in 1847, to add some amazing rooms such as The Gothic Drawing room:

Although it was never really a “proper” castle there are suits of armour absolutely everywhere.

The castle interior is dominated by The Great Hall which is 55 feet high and 60 feet long:

The drinks reception for which I was singing took place in The Octagon Saloon:

The room’s unique character is topped off (literally) by a stunning ceiling:

The Octagon Saloon was a fantastic room to sing in and my songs from the 1920s, 30s and 40s created the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed, informal drinks reception.

The booking may have been short-notice, but it was long on style and elegance!

Congratulations to Simon and Lindsey – my thanks to them for letting me be part of a very special day.
